It is estimated that around 1200 Polar Bears make the Churchill area their home
Seal River Heritage Lodge on shores of Hudson Bay with a fenced in compound. We are not allowed out of the compound unless accompanied by a guide with a shotgun. Polar bears can be anywhere.

Polar bears love the taste of petroleum based products. They will eat chair seats and anything that has the smell of petroleum

Beluga Whales concentrate by the thousands in Hudson Bay in the summer. They raise their young in the warmer waters.

That's me in the dry suit. If you get in the water away from the avon raft the Beluga Whales often will come right up to you. The guide has to keep a look out so a Polar Bear doesn't come in for a snack!!
The Polar Bears often can be seen in the water. They are probably trying to cool off and trying to catch a Beluga Whale that makes a mistake.
